Depression and Suicide:The Stats

I'm not sure why, but I find facts and figures facinating. So when I think of my ailment, I like to look into facts about it.

Here are a few things you may not have known:
  • In the case of depression, studies have shown that, on average, the risk of suicide is about 15 times higher than the average for the general population
  • The Mental Health Foundation estimates that 70 per cent of recorded suicides are by people experiencing depression
  • Suicide is the second most common cause of death in people aged 15-24, behind accidental death.
  • About 10-15% of people with bipolar disorder will die by suicide.
  • 19,000 young people every year, one person every half hour, actually attempt suicide
